Becoming Light

I have recently experienced a reawakening of my interest in Shamanism. This was inspired by Shamanic teacher and author Sandra Ingerman.


I encountered her through a podcast interview where she spoke about bringing light into the world. How? By focusing on light instead of the many tragic and difficult things we witness each and every day.  

This resonates with me. When I feel confused or sad, especially from the suffering I witness, I breathe thoughts of light, healing, and love into heart. Instantly, I feel more grounded and at peace.

In my counselling work, I create a safe space for my clients to deal with their dark and hidden places. We do this by gently shining a light on what is broken or shrouded in shame, guilt, or fear.  When we bring light into the dark corners of our lives and in the world, then we create something far greater than ourselves to connect with. And this gives us hope.  

By allowing myself to work through confusion or despair, focusing my prayer on light,  I become humble and I become light. Finally, my tender heart can see light in the dark places. This is a simple practice and prayer. Sometimes, it may feel difficult to move out of humiliation, shame or guilt and shine the light, or even find it.  But it’s there.

As Sandra shares, we need to focus on light instead of suffering and we need to see the world as healed, whole and connected. Focusing on suffering or focusing on light both use the same amount of energy. The difference is that light will heal your mind, your body, and your soul. 

Be the light you want to see in the world by becoming Light.
